Matera and Altamura Day Trip from Bari

Sassi of the rupestrian city and the best bread of Italy

Departure at 09.00 am from Petruzzelli theatre of Bari destination Matera about 1 hour by car from Bari 
In Matera we will take a 2 hours of walking tour and we will visit  this rupestrian city ,an incredible and unique place on the Murgia hills. Its old town carved in a deep ravine, is the first UNESCO site of the southern Italy, where people lived in houses- cave from the Prehistoric Age to 1952, in two amazing districts called Sassi where we can walking through lanes and paths of centuries of history very well preserved. We will visit rupestrian churches with Bizantin frescos, a cave-houses and also the medieval cathedral and the nobles district in this ancient city called the “Italian Bethlehem”, where a lot of movies have been shot including “The Passion” directed by Mel Gibson.
After the walking tour, 1 hour free time for shopping and free lunch, there are a lot of typical restaurant in the old town.
We will leave Matera to reach Altamura after 30 minutes. Situated in a dominating position on the Murga hills, in a National park, Altamura has an old town very interesting with a big cathedral of the medieval period, famous for its portal rich in stone decorations. Very known for the typical local bread, defined the best in Italy and with high quality mark DOP, Altamura has a lot of stone ovens where you can taste the typical disches of the wheat city!
At 3.00 pm we will leave Altamura to reach Bari at 4.00 pm.
